Battle At Brookfield Central

By Sa 01/18/2023, 6:30am CST

The Sabers faced a tough test heading into Tuesday night against the #2 ranked Brookfield Central team that looked to continue their impressive season and winning streak. The Lancers took control of the game early and were able to steady any sort of comeback the Sabers attempted to make. With the help of a couple threes from Junior guard Dylan Drajkowski and other key shots the Sabers went into half only down 8.

The second half looked different as the Sabers were able to get momentum going and got the Lancers lead down to 3 points. The Lancers struck back though with back to back threes to silence the comeback and stifle hope for the Sabers. However, the Sabers didn't quit and took to intentionally fouling to slow the game and put the Lancers at the free throw line. This strategy proved to be useful as the Sabers with clutch points from Junior forward Brandon Tilley and contested three point shots from Junior guard Eli Podoll in the corner and Senior forward Alex Mierow the lead went down to 3 with only 15 seconds left.

Junior guard Jacques Brooks was able to draw a travel violation giving the Sabers a chance to tie the game up on the in bounds. With a rushed pass however, the Lancers were able to steal the inbounds pass only to travel again and give the Sabers another chance. The travel violation proved to be frustrating to the Lancers coaching staff and that prompted a technical foul being called against them giving the Sabers two free throw attempts and the ball with 13 seconds left. Senior guard Will Gardner went to the line and went 1 of 2 bringing the score down to two. The Sabers who were out of time outs had to improvise the last few seconds which lead to a desperation drive from Junior guard Eli Podoll and a shot attempt that kissed the back board but just ever so slightly rimmed out at the buzzer giving the lancers the win at 67-65.

The Sabers fought to the very end with a chance to tie at the end against a very good Brookfield Central team which provides momentum heading into another top ten matchup against Homestead at the Luke Homan Showcase

Player Shout Outs:
Player of the Game: Eli Podoll started off hot and got the game going for the Sabers. In his first show out game all year the junior guard put the state of Wisconsin on notice of what he can do when he is on top of his game.
Alex Mierow proved to be a menace on defense when guarding Lancer star forward Jack Daughtery and hitting clutch shots when needed
Will Gardner again was able to shake off a slow start and show his senior leadership on the court steering the comeback and helping the team believe
Terrance Shelton was a rock defensively and showed some guard like ability slashing, driving and finishing at the rim giving the Sabers some clutch buckets.
Brandon Tilley in his second game back from injury helped mount the comeback in the second half with clutch free throws and and a couple knock down jumpers.
Jacques Brooks was able to terrorize on defense causing huge turnovers and momentous possessions for the Sabers team.

Sabers Dominate

By Saber Hoops 01/14/2023, 12:00pm CST

The Sabers looked to continue their 2 game winning streak last night against conference opponent Kenosha Bradford. Right from the beginning the Sabers took control and never looked back and ended the game in a blow out with a 61-44 win.

With strong scoring performances coming from Alex Mierow (21) and Will Gardner (20) the Saber team relied on intense defense from their junior guards Eli Podoll and Jacques Brooks. Coming back from injury was junior forward Brandon Tilly and he picked up right where he left off by hitting a jumper and playing key minutes to open up the game for the Sabers.

At half the Franklin crowd was treated to a little half time show from the 4th grade gold youth basketball team. It was a battle to the very end but team black walked away with a 1 point victory and brought home the bragging rights. Look for them to play this Sunday morning at New Berlin West High School.

The second half proved to be at sometimes difficult for the Saber squad but they were able to pull it together on offense and the bench finally delivered with junior guard Brady Clark hitting back to back threes to seal the game for good.

It was a great win for the Sabers as they look to carry on this momentum next week against two top ten teams in Brookfield Central and Homestead.

After their road win against Indian trail on Tuesday, the Seniors (pictured left to right Boston Halloran, Will Gardner, Alex Mierow, Alex Peretz, Charlie Matranga) stopped by the Hope House in Milwaukee to drop off donations to families. They were also able to learn about what these donations meant and how Hope House is helping the community and how these donations aid in providing for families in need.

Sabers Handle Business

By Saber Hoops 01/11/2023, 9:15am CST

The Franklin Sabers took on a tough conference opponent in Indian Trail last night in Kenosha and walked away with a 52-41 victory . The win last night keeps the Sabers on top in the SEC conference and improves their record to 7-4.

It was a hard fought first half with the Sabers applying pressure anywhere they could to try and stop the lengthy Hawk squad. Junior Guard Dylan Drajkowski was able to get the Franklin squad rolling on offense with 7 points in the first half. On the opposite end of the court Eli Podoll, Jacques Brooks and Brady Clark played tenaciously on defense and gave the Hawks trouble on offense. The Sabers took an eight point lead into half as well as momentum coming off a last second bucket by Junior guard Dylan Drajkowski.

Indian Trail came out with a full head of steam in the second half and were able to retake the lead mid way through the half. With huge stops on defense by Eli Podoll and Jacques Brooks paired with tough finished by Will Gardner, Alex Mierow and Terrance Shelton the Sabers were able to regain the lead and ultimately win the game.

The main focus of the game was to limit the Hawks big man and best player 6'8 Junior center Manasseh Stackhouse. Stackhouse has been on a tear this year averaging 23 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. A tag team mixture of Senior forward Alex Mierow and Terrance Shelton were able to limit Manasseh to only 11 points and a handful of rebounds.

There were two DAWGS of the game, DAWG one deservingly went to senior guard Will Gardner for his poise and determination and finish with a team high 18 points and 6 of those being close out free throws at the end to put the game away. And definitely no stranger to being top DAWG is senior forward Alex Mierow. Mierow was able to limit Manasseh as well as finish at the rim finishing with 15 hard earned points.
